I’ve played Guitar for a lot of years and have worked through the U3A for the past 3-4 years, specialising in teaching older players.
Some come along with a little experience a lot with none.
If you have some experience I will ask you to trust me - what I teach might seem a contradiction to what others do.
I teach Guitar through songs, using a combination of demonstration and example. None of us are seeking a career in Music – or at least I’m not so I look for fast results - I want any friends or family to be surprised at your Barbeque!
The method I use is to become familiar with the chords in the song. I make the chords as simple as possible, many use only 2 or even 1 finger. I use a lot of strumming to build up rhythm to suit the song. I don’t use strumming patterns.
You don’t need a big memory, I supply all the song sheets. What I want from you is a sense of humour its supposed to be fun!
A Guitar – A plectrum – I will have some so you can decide what feels right.
If you decide Guitars for you, then you will need a Guitar Stand – It’s the best accessory. A tuner is useful but not needed to start. A strap for your Guitar.
One very important thing – You need the finger nails on your left hand to be short, (that’s assuming your right-handed).
